Google is rolling out exciting new AI features for Google Photos and YouTube Shorts. These tools let users turn their photos into short videos. Think of it as taking a still image and giving it a little life.

In Google Photos, you can now create six-second video clips. On YouTube Shorts, you can choose how long you want your clip to be. However, these tools have some limitations. Unlike a previous version called Gemini, you can’t type in your own ideas. Instead, you pick from options like “Subtle movements” or “I’m feeling lucky.”

These features are starting to hit users in the U.S. today, with Android and iOS support. Over the next week, YouTube Shorts users in other countries like Canada, Australia, and New Zealand will also get access.

Coming soon is a Remix tool for Google Photos that will allow you to change the style of your photos. You can make them look like anime, sketches, or even 3D animations. All these tools will be easy to find under a new ‘Create’ tab, which rolls out next month.

It’s worth noting that these features are still in the early stages. Google warns that results might not always be spot on. Users can provide feedback by giving a thumbs up or down on generated images. Plus, any AI-generated content will come with a watermark, making it clear that it’s not a regular photo or video.

YouTube Shorts is also introducing new effects. Users can now create images from doodles or apply fun video effects that transform how they look. All these features will be available in the new AI Playground hub in Shorts, which is ready for users in several countries.

If we look at where Google stands compared to Apple, it’s clear they’re using different approaches. Google lets users explore their creativity with fewer restrictions. Apple, on the other hand, opts for more cautious features to avoid deepfakes and misinformation.
