Residents in Boston are getting a helping hand with grocery costs through the Double Up Food Bucks program. This initiative is aimed at those who rely on SNAP benefits, offering them discounts on fresh fruits and vegetables at participating stores.

Recently, Nubian Markets, a grocery store celebrating the African diaspora in Roxbury, became the sixth location to join the program. Mayor Michelle Wu attended the launch and stressed the importance of affordable access to fresh food for families in Boston.

The program, introduced in 2018, allows SNAP users to get up to $20 off on fresh produce each day. By using their EBT card and mentioning the Double Up discount at the checkout, participants can double their purchasing power, making healthy food options more attainable.

As reported, Boston has around 143,000 residents receiving SNAP benefits. The Double Up program has distributed over $850,000 in discounts since it started. The initiative is funded by a federal grant from the USDA and matched by city funds, showing a commitment to both public health and local economies.

Local residents, like Gwendolyn Mitchell, have expressed the challenges of rising grocery prices. She noted that three bags of groceries can easily cost her up to $200, stressing that managing a household with limited means can be much harder now. In a recent report, common breakfast items were found to cost between $38 and $50 at various stores, further highlighting the growing food costs.

The response to the Double Up program is positive, especially among local store owners like Yusuf Yassin of Nubian Markets. He sees community members benefiting from the program—helping them afford the foods they love while supporting local business.

“It’s spaces like this where people feel connected and cared for,” Mayor Wu said, pointing out that local stores cater to the cultural needs of their neighborhoods.

Users like Levi Caldwell appreciate that Nubian Markets offers unique cultural foods, which is not always available in larger chain stores. Similarly, Emmanuel Moore, who struggles with diabetes, finds it difficult to eat healthily within his $50 budget. But with the Double Up program, he’s hopeful about shopping more often at Nubian Markets.

Overall, the Double Up Food Bucks program is making a noticeable difference in helping low-income families afford fresh produce while promoting local businesses. This initiative not only enhances food security but also fosters community ties, illustrating the power of accessible nutrition.
