Negaunee Township, Mich. recently hosted an informative event aimed at helping people grow their own food. Gary Heilig, a former horticulture educator from Michigan State University, shared his expertise on gardening in uncertain times.
During his talk at the Marquette Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Heilig emphasized the challenges of feeding large populations, like those in New York City. He pointed out that relying on trucked-in produce can lead to problems, especially when supply chains are disrupted, like during the COVID-19 pandemic. He noticed that many people ended up buying unhealthy, processed foods while nutritious options like vegetables were left behind.
Heilig’s goal is to inspire self-reliance. He asked, “What would happen if our usual sources of food suddenly stopped coming?” He advocated for home gardening as a solution.
He offered practical tips for successful gardening. For example, he suggested using a shovel instead of gas-powered tools, which is not only more environmentally friendly but also good exercise. He advised avoiding planting near walnut trees and highlighted the importance of choosing a site with well-drained soil.
Heilig concluded by reminding everyone that while America has abundant resources, it’s wise to be prepared for tough times ahead. Growing your own garden can provide fresh produce and greater food security.
