BELLEVUE, Neb. – The Omaha EITC Coalition is excited to expand its free tax preparation services to Sarpy County through a new partnership with Bellevue University. This collaboration will bring much-needed support to local working families.
For over 20 years, the coalition has helped more than 5,000 families claim millions in refunds and credits. Their services target low- to moderate-income families, making tax help accessible to those who need it most.
Ed Leahy, the director of the Omaha EITC Coalition, noted, “We’ve simply outgrown it,” emphasizing the need for the move from their Omaha location to the former Military Veterans Center on Bellevue University’s campus. This new spot will enable many residents in Sarpy County to access these crucial services for the first time.
Leahy shared, “Getting all of that for free is a real boost to a family’s economy.” Last tax season, they served over 3,300 individuals, with many families returning year after year for assistance. “We serve struggling families who can’t afford to pay for tax help,” he explained.
In addition to free tax preparation, the coalition also provides financial education and support services. Leahy recalled seeing parents bring their children in to learn about filing taxes. He emphasized a supportive atmosphere where families feel welcomed rather than judged. “We want to offer a hand up, not a handout,” he said.
Research shows that access to free tax services can lead to greater financial stability. A study by the Urban Institute found that families using these services often achieve better financial outcomes than those who don’t.
The new VITA center at Bellevue University is set to open on December 8. Families can begin making appointments the first week of January. This initiative is more than just tax help; it’s about empowering families to improve their financial future.
