Unlock Fresh Opportunities: Apply Now for Oklahoma’s Local Food for Schools Program!

The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry is now accepting applications for the Local Foods for Schools program for Fiscal Year 2026. This initiative aims to reimburse schools for buying fresh, minimally processed foods like fruits, vegetables, meats, eggs, dairy, and nuts.

The goal is to help Oklahoma schools connect with local farmers and ranchers. “This program opens up a significant opportunity for schools to provide students access to nutritious, local food,” said Blayne Arthur, Oklahoma’s Secretary of Agriculture. He emphasized that this program not only benefits schools but also supports local producers and showcases agricultural opportunities available right in Oklahoma.

The state legislature has earmarked over $3 million for this program. Schools can apply online, and it’s a first-come, first-served basis until the funds run out. Additionally, farmers who wish to supply these schools can also apply to be approved vendors. Schools will only receive reimbursements for purchases made from these approved vendors.

Interestingly, local food initiatives have seen a growing trend across the United States. According to a recent survey by the USDA, nearly 60% of school districts are interested in incorporating more local foods into their menus. This shift reflects a nationwide desire for healthier meal options and support for local economies.
