The City of Darwin is dedicated to creating a cooler, cleaner, and greener environment. To achieve this, they’re focusing on what the community can do through three main strategies. Each year, there’s $50,000 available for innovative local projects that align with Darwin’s 2030 Climate Emergency Strategy, Greening Darwin Strategy, or Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy.
Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis encourages local groups, non-profits, and businesses to apply for these grants. “Our goal is to support projects that positively impact Darwin’s environment,” he stated. The latest round of Environment and Climate Change Grants will open on April 1, 2025.
Past projects have included community workshops at the Lakeside Drive Community Garden and events like the NT Native Eco Fair. These efforts help reduce waste, build resilience against climate impacts, and protect local trees and natural areas.
Applications should clearly explain how the projects contribute to Darwin’s environmental goals. Those that are well-planned, local, and enhance community life will stand out.
The grant applications will be accepted from April 1 until May 17, 2025. Successful projects will receive funding starting in July 2025, and all activities must be completed within a year of receiving the grant.
In terms of wider impact, local environmental initiatives are essential. According to a recent report from the Climate Council, Australia’s cities need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% by 2030 to address the climate crisis effectively. Community-based projects, like those supported by the City of Darwin, can significantly contribute to these nationwide goals.
