Unlock Funding for Your Green Ideas: Nanaimo Launches Environmental Grants for Community Projects!

Exciting news for Nanaimo residents! Local groups can now apply for city funding to help protect the environment and address climate challenges.

As of January 30, two grant programs are available: the Community Watershed Restoration Grant and the Community Environmental Sustainability Project Grant.

The watershed grant offers up to $20,000 for projects aimed at improving urban streams, protecting riparian areas, and conserving natural habitats. Meanwhile, the sustainability grant provides up to $5,000 for smaller, innovative projects that promote environmental health, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and help the community adapt to climate change.

Mayor Leonard Krog emphasizes the importance of community involvement. “Protecting Nanaimo’s environment is a team sport, and community volunteers are the stars of the team,” he stated. “These grants ensure volunteers have the resources they need to succeed.”

An online information session is scheduled for February 10 at 5 p.m. Interested participants should RSVP via email at sustainability@nanaimo.ca.

Applications are due by March 9 at 4 p.m. You can find all the details and necessary forms on the City of Nanaimo’s grants webpage.

Climate change is a pressing issue. According to a recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, we must make immediate efforts to reduce emissions to limit global warming. Local efforts like these grants are crucial as they empower communities to take meaningful action.

With these funding opportunities, Nanaimo is taking a step toward a healthier environment for everyone.
