The Sustainability Fund is currently accepting applications for projects that can help Christchurch tackle climate change. This fund is available to community groups, schools, social enterprises, and businesses that align with the Christchurch City Council’s goals.
The Fund aims to address climate change in various ways. It helps the community understand the impacts of climate change, promotes a transition to a low-emission economy, and encourages stewardship of our natural resources.
Last year, the Fund supported 33 projects focused on sustainability. These included initiatives such as promoting eco-friendly transportation, restoring local biodiversity, and cleaning waterways. John Filsell, the Head of Community Support and Partnerships, shared his enthusiasm, stating, “This Fund sparks incredible ideas and allows us to work alongside dedicated individuals and groups.”
Some noteworthy projects included bird restoration in Morgans Valley, improving water quality at Te Wharau Stream, and efforts at Waimairi Beach to restore dunes and control predators. Filsell noted that these initiatives have real impacts on the community and environment.
For this round, they are particularly interested in projects that promote collaboration, showcase long-term benefits, and are innovative and inclusive. The deadline for applications is January 23, 2026.
Research suggests that community-led projects can significantly influence local environmental improvements. A recent survey showed that 85% of people believe community involvement is key in addressing climate issues. Supporting initiatives through funds like these can lead to lasting change.
