Microsoft has made waves in the gaming world by introducing its full-screen Xbox Mode for Windows 11. This feature first appeared with the ROG Ally Xbox handheld, which was designed to challenge Steam’s long-standing Big Picture Mode. Starting this April, Xbox Mode will be available on more Windows 11 devices, bringing a tailored experience for gamers.
Xbox Mode aims to create a smooth experience when using a controller on a PC. Users will be able to browse their game library, launch titles, and switch between apps more easily. This aligns closely with what Steam offers. Microsoft previously shared that its task switcher would help players quickly move between games and applications, making gameplay more fluid and enjoyable.
At the recent Game Developers Conference (GDC), Microsoft also unveiled plans for Project Helix. This technology allows for shaders to be pre-compiled, which should reduce stuttering issues that can occur when starting new games.
Furthermore, Microsoft announced updates to DirectStorage, their technology for speeding up game loading times. This update will introduce Zstandard compression for improved performance during gameplay. In addition, a new tool called the “Game Asset Conditional Library” will enhance how game assets are processed, making the development pipeline smoother.
