Zachary Cole is a junior from Madison, majoring in mathematics with a minor in actuarial science. He had a strong desire to learn and travel, even taking his first flight to Japan for his study abroad experience.
Cole connected with UA’s Education Abroad and External Scholarships and Fellowships offices. They helped him secure scholarships that made his trip possible. Here’s what he had to say about his journey.
What inspired you to seek scholarships for studying abroad?
I wanted to study abroad for the experience and knew it could be costly. I discovered scholarships through the university, which made it easier for me to pursue this opportunity.
What was your first experience studying abroad like?
Thanks to the Gilman Scholarship, I traveled to Japan. I took classes in religion and popular culture, and I really immersed myself in the language and traditions. Visiting places like the Meiji Jingu Shrine was a highlight that deepened my understanding of Japanese culture.
How was it being on a plane for the first time during an international trip?
How has studying abroad affected you?
Studying abroad has widened my academic view and helped me think more globally. It connected me with amazing people and improved my adaptability and communication skills, making me more prepared for my future career.
Do you have more trips planned?
Yes! I’m excited to participate in the Frederick Douglass and Daniel O’Connell Global Internship in Dublin, Ireland, where I’ll spend eight weeks learning and working.

Don’t hesitate! The experience can be truly transformative, and there are many resources available to help make it affordable. Research early, apply for as many scholarships as you can, and reach out for help when needed.
