The Bharat International Rice Conference (BIRC) 2025 in New Delhi was a groundbreaking event, connecting thousands of Indian farmers with exporters and global buyers. This two-day conference, held on October 30-31, celebrated India’s diverse rice varieties, including over 1,000 showcased types, many of which are heritage and GI-tagged (Geographical Indication).

Farmers from various states participated, eager to expand their markets. Ajay Kumar Singh, director of a farmer’s producer organization, highlighted the potential for his GI-tagged adamchini rice. “We’re now looking to market it beyond eastern Uttar Pradesh and even online,” he shared. This sentiment was echoed by other farmers.

For instance, Janardan from Kerala spoke about the global attention his organic GI rice received. “It thrives in marshy areas and is packed with nutrients. This is why it commands a premium price,” he explained.

BIRC 2025 proved vital for networking and exploring export options. One farmer pointed out that meeting potential buyers opened pathways to markets previously unreachable. Shabir Ahmed Baba from Jammu and Kashmir confirmed this, stating that his non-basmati rice might soon reach Japan, thanks to connections made at the event.

The Indian Rice Exporters Federation aims to boost India’s global rice market share, targeting 55-60%. These ambitions come at a time when the rice market is critical for food security, highlighted by recent reports showing that rice sustains nearly half of the global population.

This conference not only showcased rice varieties but also promoted India’s agricultural heritage and potential in international trade. As farmers share their stories and successes, the future of Indian rice looks promising both at home and abroad.
