Unlock Healthy Summer Meals: Discover What Your Local School Districts Are Offering!

The Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls, and Lakeland school districts are gearing up for the 2025 USDA Summer Food Service Program. This initiative offers free meals to kids aged 18 and under during the summer months. Meals are available Monday to Friday and no sign-up is needed. Just a heads-up: all sites will be closed on July 4.

Coeur d’Alene Meal Locations:

• Lakes Middle School: Breakfast from 8 to 9 a.m., Lunch from 11 a.m. to noon, June 16-Aug. 15.
• Northwest Expedition Academy: Breakfast from 8 to 9 a.m., Lunch from 11 a.m. to noon, June 16-Aug. 15.
• Winton Elementary: Breakfast from 8 to 9 a.m., Lunch from 11 a.m. to noon, June 16-Aug. 15.

This summer, Healthy Harvest, along with Eat Smart Idaho and Southwest Foodservice Excellence, will add some fun to lunchtime. Every Monday, kids will enjoy an interactive farm-to-table experience at Lakes Middle School, on Wednesdays at Northwest Expedition Academy, and Fridays at Winton Elementary.

For culinary enthusiasts, there will be cooking classes using fresh ingredients from the Healthy Harvest. These will happen every other week during lunch at:

• Lakes Middle School: June 23, July 7, July 21, Aug. 4.
• Northwest Expedition Academy: June 25, July 9, July 23, Aug. 6.
• Winton Elementary: June 27, July 11, July 25, Aug. 8.

Also, the “Soccer for Success” program will be available for kids. It teaches soccer skills along with social and emotional lessons. Gear will be provided. It runs every Wednesday at Northwest Expedition Academy from 9 to 10 a.m. for older kids, and from 10 to 11 a.m. for younger ones. Classes will also be held on Fridays at Winton, tailored for kids in different age groups.

Post Falls Meal Locations:

• Ponderosa Elementary: Breakfast from 8 to 9 a.m., Lunch from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., June 16-Aug. 15.
• Seltice Elementary: Breakfast from 8 to 9 a.m., Lunch from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., June 16-Aug. 15.
• Post Falls Middle School: Breakfast from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., Lunch from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., June 16-Aug. 15.

The Post Falls district will also partner with the local public library to host story times and activities for children, combining fun with learning. For more info, you can check their nutrition page here.

Lakeland Meal Locations:

• Lakeland Middle School: Breakfast from 7:30 to 9 a.m., Lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., June 11-July 17.
• Athol Elementary: Breakfast from 9 to 9:30 a.m., June 16-July 17.
• Timberlake High School: Breakfast from 10 to 10:30 a.m., June 11-July 17.

Programs like this are vital as they provide essential nutrition to children when school meals aren’t available. Studies show that proper nutrition can greatly affect children’s ability to learn and grow, making initiatives like this crucial for community health.
