Unlock New Opportunities: Northeastern State University Launches Military Science Bachelor’s Degree Program!

TAHLEQUAH – Northeastern State University (NSU) has introduced a Bachelor of Science degree in military science, offering new paths for students interested in military leadership and related careers.

This program focuses on key areas like leadership, strategy, operations, and communication. Students will dive into military history to understand how past strategies can influence current decision-making. They will also sharpen their communication skills, which are vital for effective operations.

Students can choose electives in three areas: communication, public relations, and operations management. This flexibility allows them to tailor their education to their career goals.

Capt. Brent Welch, an assistant professor in Military Science, emphasizes NSU’s dedication to supporting military-affiliated students. “We provide tailored academic advising and resources to help them navigate VA benefits,” he says. This support ensures students have the skills they need to thrive academically and professionally.

NSU has a rich history of preparing military leaders. Its Army ROTC program, established in 1974, has commissioned many officers and offers scholarships, stipends, and hands-on training with veterans.

The university’s commitment extends to all veterans and their families, participating in the Yellow Ribbon Program and allowing academic credit for military experience. NSU’s Veteran Services office provides dedicated resources to support these students. For four straight years, NSU has earned the Silver Military Friendly School designation from Viqtory, highlighting its efforts to connect with military communities.

NSU President Rodney Hanley notes that the new military science degree equips students with essential skills for success in both military and civilian roles. “We are dedicated to preparing the next generation of leaders while honoring our long-standing tradition of service,” he says.

In a recent survey, 73% of veterans reported that programs like NSU’s significantly improve their educational experience. This finding underscores the importance of institutions that prioritize military support.
