Local 7 Opens New Health Clinic in Latham
The United Association Local 7 has celebrated the grand opening of its new health clinic, the Local 7 Health & Wellness Center, located in Latham. This clinic offers free medical services to union members and their families.
What the Clinic Offers
The 2,500 square foot facility is situated on the first floor of the Capital Region Health Park, just a mile from Local 7’s headquarters. Managed by Marathon Health, it employs a nurse practitioner and a medical assistant, and is open five days a week, including evenings and weekends.
Local 7 represents about 1,400 skilled workers like plumbers and pipefitters throughout the Capital Region. Ed Nadeau, the business manager, expressed hopes for a healthier membership through the clinic. He noted, “Our goal is to ensure that our members have access to primary care without relying on the emergency room for non-emergency situations.”
Services Available
The clinic provides essential services such as:
- Medical and wellness screenings.
- Blood work and physicals for both adults and children.
- Sick care appointments.
- A small on-site pharmacy for common medications.
This is particularly vital as some members may lack a primary care doctor. The clinic is available to everyone, regardless of their existing healthcare arrangements.
Growing Demand for Skilled Workers
Union officials report strong demand for skilled laborers in New York. With several large projects planned or underway, including a new $1.7 billion home for the Wadsworth Center and a $100 billion factory from Micron Technology, the union needs to recruit more workers. The new clinic helps attract potential members amidst rising healthcare costs faced by many families.
Tyler Waterhouse, a service technician and Local 7 member since 2019, shared his positive experience: “Getting a physical through the clinic was quick and simple. It’s a great added benefit when other jobs are cutting healthcare options.”
Overall, the clinic aims to provide a supportive and healthy environment for Local 7, enhancing the wellness of its members while addressing the increasing labor demands in the region.
