Google is shaking things up with a new beta feature called “Personal Intelligence” for its Gemini app. This tool lets the AI assistant pull together information from your Google apps like Gmail, Photos, Search, and YouTube history to give you more personalized responses.
Before this, Gemini could already fetch data, but now it can actually connect the dots. For instance, it can link an email thread to a video you recently watched. This means Gemini understands your preferences without needing specific prompts.
The feature is currently turned off by default. Users can decide when to connect their apps. Many folks might hesitate to let AI sift through their personal content. But if you choose to enable it, Gemini will only act when it thinks it can help.
Josh Woodward, VP at Google Labs, described its abilities in a recent blog post. He explains that Personal Intelligence excels at “reasoning across complex sources” and pulling small details from your data to answer questions.
He shared a relatable scenario: while waiting in line for new tires, he couldn’t remember his car’s tire size. While most AI can find that information, Gemini took it a step further by recommending all-weather tires after recognizing family photos from a recent road trip. It even retrieved his license plate number from an image.
Woodward mentioned that the app has been great at suggesting books, shows, and vacation ideas. Recently, it even recommended an overnight train trip instead of the usual tourist spots, showing how it learns from your past interests and trips.
Safety is a key focus. There are protections in place to ensure that sensitive topics, such as health information, are handled cautiously. Gemini won’t make assumptions about these areas unless you specifically ask for that information.
Interestingly, Gemini does not directly use the content from your Gmail or Photos for training. Instead, it relies on specific prompts and responses to learn. This means your personal data remains secure while still allowing for a tailored experience.
As of now, Personal Intelligence is rolling out to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S. Google plans to expand it to more regions and to the free tier eventually.
Users can experiment with prompts like “Help me plan a weekend in [city],” or “Recommend some documentaries based on my interests.” These examples show how the app aims to enhance your experience, making it truly personal.
