PayPal made an exciting announcement recently: it will start using a new shopping protocol called the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) in collaboration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. This means that beginning in 2026, you’ll be able to shop right within ChatGPT. Imagine asking a chatbot for product suggestions and purchasing without leaving the conversation!

The ACP is an open-source tool developed by OpenAI that allows businesses to showcase their products in AI applications. Users can confirm their orders, payment, and shipping details directly through ChatGPT, thanks to OpenAI’s “Instant Checkout” feature launched in September. This makes shopping more efficient and seamless.

With PayPal, customers can use their wallets for checkout. This not only simplifies payments but also provides buyer and seller protection as well as options for resolving disputes. PayPal is also implementing a separate payments API to accept card payments within ChatGPT.

Next year, PayPal will enable merchants to feature their products in ChatGPT across several categories, including apparel, electronics, beauty, and home improvement. The great part? Merchants won’t have to create their own integrations; PayPal will manage everything behind the scenes.

Moreover, PayPal is launching an agentic commerce suite that allows merchants to display their catalogs in AI applications, accept payments across different platforms, and gain insights into consumer behavior. This initiative is part of PayPal’s effort to become a key player in AI-driven shopping experiences as more people use AI for everyday tasks.

In May, PayPal partnered with the AI search tool Perplexity to allow users to make purchases within the app. They also announced a collaboration with Google in September to integrate their products with Google’s Agent Payments Protocol. This shows PayPal’s growing influence in the AI shopping space.

At the heart of this shift is the desire to simplify how people shop. “Hundreds of millions turn to ChatGPT each week for everyday tasks, including product searches, and over 400 million use PayPal to shop,” said Alex Chriss, CEO of PayPal. He believes this partnership will streamline the shopping journey from chat to checkout.

As consumers increasingly expect seamless shopping experiences, PayPal’s innovations may play a significant role in shaping the future of e-commerce.
