Tinder is rolling out a new AI feature called “Chemistry” aimed at improving matchmaking. Currently being tested in Australia and New Zealand, this feature will analyze users’ photos and interests to suggest better matches, a significant addition to Tinder’s planned updates for 2026.
What is the Chemistry Feature?
The Chemistry feature uses interactive questions and, with user permission, can look at photos from the phone’s Camera Roll. This helps Tinder gauge a user’s lifestyle and personality more deeply than just looking at a profile or swiping. For instance, if your photos show you enjoying outdoor activities, the app might match you with others who love the same things.
Spencer Rascoff, the CEO of Match Group, which owns Tinder, states that the goal is to foster “more natural connections.” This approach aims to connect users more authentically, moving beyond the standard bio and swipe experience.
Tinder’s Financial Challenges
Despite this innovation, Tinder is facing financial hurdles. Match Group has reported nine consecutive quarters of declining paying subscribers. It anticipates a $14 million drop in Tinder’s revenue for the fourth quarter of 2025 due to ongoing testing. Projections for overall revenue in Q4 are between $865 million and $875 million, slightly falling short of analyst expectations.
In the third quarter, Match Group reported revenues of $914.2 million and a profit of $160.8 million. However, Tinder’s revenue decreased by 3% year-over-year, and the app lost 7% of its paying users.
AI Innovations and Safety Measures
Tinder is also integrating AI for safety. One notable feature prompts users with a caution: “Are you sure?” before sending potentially offensive messages. Another tool helps users choose their best photos to enhance their profiles. The app is exploring other features too, like double dating and facial verification aimed at improving security.
This trend isn’t unique to Tinder. Other companies, like Meta, are testing similar AI tools for image editing, raising important questions about user privacy.
Market Trends and User Behavior
Even with these advancements, Tinder faces stiff competition as more young people are opting for real-life interactions over online dating. Economic challenges in the U.S. have also led to decreased spending on dating services.
