Ricoh has unveiled the price for its new GR IV Monochrome camera—$2,199.95. This is a significant jump of $700 from the standard model, making it a 46% increase. Monochrome cameras usually cost more than their color counterparts, but there are few examples in the market—mainly from Leica and Ricoh Pentax.
Take Leica’s Q3 Monochrom, which is priced at $7,790, over $1,000 more than the regular Q3 model. Similarly, the M11 Monochrom costs $10,160, exceeding the standard M11’s price of $9,840. Ricoh Pentax also got in on the act with its K-3 III Monochrome, which launched for $200 more than the standard K-3 III in 2023. However, that model arrived two years later than its counterpart, unlike the GR IV Monochrome that arrived only months apart.
Many photographers question the steep price tag, feeling they’re paying extra for a camera that lacks a color filter. This isn’t a new debate.
