Unlock the Future: Join the Exciting Cyber Symposium at the University of North Dakota!

The Cyber Awareness and Research Symposium is gearing up for its fifth year. More than 300 people are expected to attend this special event, held from October 27 to 30 at the UND Memorial Union.

Prakash Ranganathan, an associate professor and director of cybersecurity research at the University of North Dakota, believes this symposium is unique. It’s the only annual event hosted by an IEEE chapter focused on cybersecurity. “We want to raise awareness about best practices in cybersecurity,” he said.

This year’s event is packed with activities. Attendees can look forward to workshops, talks from guest speakers, and even a competition for university and high school teams. October was chosen for the symposium because it’s Cybersecurity Month, making it a perfect fit to educate and engage.

The symposium also serves as a recruiting platform for students interested in fields like cybersecurity, engineering, and artificial intelligence. Ranganathan aims to elevate UND’s profile nationally and ensure that both students and the community are informed about cybersecurity.

AI is a hot topic at UND, too. President Andrew Armacost recently mentioned the goal to make UND the go-to university for AI in North Dakota. This involves partnerships and collaboration across different sectors to prepare students for a tech-driven future.

While the focus is on cybersecurity and AI, Armacost also highlighted the relevance of the humanities in this space. He emphasized understanding how AI affects areas like career prospects and education in the liberal arts.

In addition, the research landscape for cybersecurity at UND is expanding, thanks in part to a grant aimed at protecting power substations in collaboration with Minnkota Power.

Community support is crucial for the success of events like this. Ranganathan appreciates all the sponsorship helping to drive these initiatives forward, stating, “We can’t do this without UND’s community.”

For those keen on cybersecurity, AI, or the intersection of both, this symposium promises valuable insights and opportunities for engagement.
