Light from the full moon can drown out fainter stars and galaxies, but during a new moon, the sky is much darker.

New moons, by definition, occur when the moon is positioned near the sun, leaving the side facing Earth entirely dark. This phase is crucial for astronomers. For them, the absence of moonlight means a clearer view of distant objects like meteors or galaxies.

The lunar cycle typically follows a pattern: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, and waning crescent, taking about 29.5 days to complete. Sometimes, due to calendar discrepancies, a season may squeeze in an extra new moon, hence the term Black Moon.

Interestingly, the term “Black Moon” can refer to another phenomenon as well. If a month has two new moons, the second is also called a Black Moon. This type occurs about every 29 months.
