IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa Health Care is on the lookout for several new team members for jobs that don’t require advanced degrees.
Positions such as medical assistants and pharmacy technicians are in high demand. Michael Lynch, the talent acquisition manager, emphasizes the importance of these roles. For example, pharmacy technicians play a critical role in preparing medications. “They ensure patients get their medications safely, whether in the hospital or for at-home prescriptions,” noted Alex Mersch, assistant director of ambulatory specialty pharmacy programs.
To apply, candidates need a high school diploma or equivalent. Once hired, they begin as non-certified technicians and have one year to complete their certification. This timeframe includes hands-on training, which is vital for their success.
Medical assistants are also essential. They help physicians provide care by assisting patients in various ways. Lynch states, “Medical assistants are key in ensuring that physicians can focus on patients’ needs.”
UIHC offers training programs for both pharmacy technicians and medical assistants. Though these positions don’t require an advanced degree, they are excellent entry points into the healthcare field. Mersch explains, “These jobs can serve as a stepping stone, helping individuals transition to other healthcare roles or establish fulfilling careers.”

In recent years, the healthcare industry has grown rapidly. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs for medical assistants are expected to grow by 19% from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations. This trend highlights the demand for skilled workers in the sector.
