Generative AI is popping up everywhere, transforming various products and services. One area where it’s making a big splash is coding. Developers, both independent and large companies, are turning to AI tools to help them write and fix code. Now, indie developers can use a fantastic new tool for free—Google has rolled out Gemini Code Assist for everyone.
Initially launched as an enterprise tool last year, Gemini Code Assist now comes with most of its great features available to individual users. Unlike generic AI models like ChatGPT, Gemini Code Assist works seamlessly within the tools developers already use. This means you can keep your workflow smooth, without constantly switching between screens. The model adapts to your coding context, offering timely suggestions and helping you tackle specific problems as you chat about your code, as long as it’s in a public domain language.
When it first arrived, Gemini Code Assist had a subscription price of $45 per month. But now? It’s completely free for individual developers, and the limits are pretty generous. Google reports that users get 180,000 code completions each month—a huge boost that means even the busiest developers can keep going without hitting a wall. For comparison, Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot offers much lower limits, with just 2,000 code completions and 50 chat messages per month. In fact, Google pointed out that Gemini Code Assist provides 90 times the completions of Copilot.
