Apple is gearing up to launch an exciting feature in its next iPhone software update: the ability to create custom digital tickets and gift cards right in the Wallet app. This new “Create a Pass” tool aims to fill a gap in the current offerings, where many services don’t yet support Wallet.
Currently, the Wallet app is great for accessing passes from various apps, along with credit and debit cards for Apple Pay. However, there are still many situations where users need digital passes that aren’t compatible. With the new feature, users can take a simple QR code—perhaps from a gym membership or concert ticket—and turn it into a personalized pass.
In testing versions of the upcoming iOS 17, users can find this feature by tapping the “+” button within the Wallet app. It guides you through creating passes for tickets, memberships, or gift cards. You can start from scratch or simply scan a QR code with your phone’s camera to generate a digital ticket. There are plenty of customization options, too. Users can mix and match styles, colors, and text to make each pass unique.
Apple is introducing three templates for different needs: a standard pass in orange, a blue membership pass for places like gyms, and a purple event pass for tickets to shows or games. While Apple hasn’t officially commented yet, hints in software code suggest that this feature has been in the works for some time.
This addition could give iOS a bit of an edge over Android. Google Wallet has offered similar pass-building features for a while now. As of late 2023, more than 50% of smartphone users rely on these kinds of digital wallets, according to a recent survey by Statista.
With the upcoming updates to iOS 17, Apple is not only improving Wallet but also enhancing its operating system with new artificial intelligence tools and performance upgrades. These changes will be unveiled in June at the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference.
