In this recent study, researchers from the Max-Planck-Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany monitored the eye movements of 20 dogs as their owners tried to guide them to hidden treats using different signals. The dogs wore special gear that tracked where they were looking.

The study tested five different cues: simple pointing, pointing while looking at the treat, just looking, fake throwing, and merely speaking without any gestures. The findings were revealing. While pointing alone drew the dogs’ gaze to the owner’s hand, combining pointing with a directed gaze shifted their focus more effectively to the hidden treat.

According to the results published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, the duo of pointing and looking was incredibly effective for getting dogs to pay attention to a hidden reward. On the other hand, gestures like fake throwing didn’t lead to the same level of focus on the target object.

The research indicates that when dog owners point and maintain eye contact, their pets keep their attention on the indicated object for longer. This suggests that the combination of these two signals—pointing and gazing—works together to enhance the chance of drawing the dog’s focus.
