Kean University has introduced a new major in artificial intelligence (AI), making it the first university in New Jersey to do so. Starting this fall, students can pursue a Bachelor of Science in AI, which is part of a broader push to integrate advanced technology into education.
During his opening address, President Lamont O. Repollet highlighted several innovative initiatives, including the establishment of an Artificial Intelligence Center of Excellence. Professors will also use AI tools, such as tutors and research aids, in their courses. This approach aims to combine technology and human creativity to better prepare students for future careers.
AI is a hot topic in education across the country. According to CNBC, over a dozen universities offer bachelor’s degrees in AI as of January. For instance, Penn State recently unveiled a similar degree in AI engineering.
The new program at Kean will focus on skills in high demand, such as building large language models and understanding the ethical implications of AI. Graduates can expect opportunities in various fields, including healthcare, finance, and cybersecurity.
Repollet emphasized the importance of AI in the university’s strategic plan, “Elevate 2030.” He sees AI as a crucial element for transforming research and enhancing teaching methods. Additionally, Kean is developing its own AI platform, “Keanu AI,” named after its mascot.
This initiative reflects a growing trend in education where universities seek to adapt and innovate to meet the changing landscape of technology. As the demand for AI skills continues to rise, programs like Kean’s may play a key role in shaping the future workforce.
