Penn’s Graduate School of Education has launched a degree focused on AI in education!

Penn’s Graduate School of Education is set to offer its first AI-focused degree in fall 2025. This is a groundbreaking program in the Ivy League, designed for those keen on blending AI and education.
The new Master of Science in Education in Learning Analytics and Artificial Intelligence will be conducted online. It’s tailored for professionals interested in how AI can transform learning worldwide.
The curriculum covers essential topics: from the basics of machine learning to the ethical challenges of AI in the classroom. Students will learn the latest AI techniques and how to turn raw data into actionable insights.
According to Ryan Baker, a professor involved with the program, students will engage in a mix of traditional online classes, intelligent tutoring systems, and discussions with instructors. They’ll also interact with a generative AI assistant named JeepyTA.
This master’s program isn’t just about AI. It emphasizes real-world applications of technology to improve education. Graduates will be well-equipped to tackle the challenges in using AI for teaching and learning.
Haiying Li, the Program Manager, shared her excitement: “Big data and AI are changing our lives, including education. Our program combines innovative techniques in learning analytics and AI to drive change in education.”
The focus is on educational applications rather than general AI. The curriculum consists of ten courses, with eight required and two electives, while concluding with a capstone project. Required courses include “Big Data, Education, and Society” and “Core Methods in Educational Data Mining.” Electives will dive into advanced topics like deep learning and language models.
Applicants should have a basic understanding of quantitative methods and an interest in education. Learning Python before the program starts is also necessary.
Applications are open on a rolling basis, but to be considered for the Fall 2025 cohort, it’s best to apply by February 1.
