The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa has introduced two innovative graduate programs aimed at preparing students for exciting careers in artificial intelligence (AI) and data science. These programs are designed with flexibility in mind, making it easier for working professionals and students to pursue advanced education while juggling other commitments.
“Our aim is to make computing education more accessible, especially for those who might not have envisioned themselves in this field,” says Guylaine Poisson, the Chair and Professor of the Department of Information and Computer Sciences (ICS). This initiative responds to the rising demand for tech-savvy professionals, not just in Hawaiʻi, but across the globe.
Both programs are offered through UH Mānoa’s Outreach College. They are taught by experienced faculty within the ICS department, part of the College of Natural Sciences. Philip Williams, Acting Dean of the College, notes, “These programs provide essential pathways for students of all backgrounds, allowing them to expand their AI understanding and gain valuable industry experience. As AI continues to reshape our economy and society, these offerings are crucial.”
President Wendy Hensel of UH emphasizes the significance of these programs, stating, “AI and data science are transforming every field. We are committed to equipping our students with the necessary skills to thrive in this rapidly evolving landscape.”
Graduate Certificate in Applied Computing
The new Graduate Certificate in Applied Computing focuses on AI and data science and is the first of its kind in the state. It offers a flexible online structure and can be completed within a year. This 15-credit program is geared towards students from non-computer science backgrounds, emphasizing hands-on skills that are tailored to real-world applications, particularly within Hawaiʻi’s unique challenges in sectors like healthcare and environmental science.
Anyone with a bachelor’s degree can apply, making it a great option for working professionals looking to change careers or upskill. Those who excel in this program can transition to the Professional Master’s in Computer Science, with credits transferring upon admission. Prospective students need a foundational understanding of programming in a language like Python or Java, whether through coursework or practical experience.
Professional Master’s in Computer Science
The Professional Master’s degree builds on the foundation set by the Graduate Certificate. Designed for individuals with a computer science background or those who have performed well in the Graduate Certificate, this two-year program delves deeper into AI and data science. It offers advanced training and the chance to develop a competitive portfolio, with a flexible hybrid format to accommodate students’ other life commitments. Recently approved by the UH Board of Regents, this program also shows a prioritization of student success.
Graduates can pursue various roles as AI specialists or data scientists, benefiting from a strong network of local employers and internship opportunities that can lead to rewarding careers in tech.
“These programs aim to broaden educational access, allowing more people to engage in high-demand fields,” says Timothy Slaughter, Interim Dean of Outreach College. “They create vital connections between the university and the wider community.”
Applications for both programs are currently open, with the first classes set to start in fall 2025. Interested candidates should apply by August 1, 2025.

In an era where data-driven decisions and technological advancement are key, these programs reflect a growing trend in education. As industries adapt to digital changes, the skills gained through these programs will be critical in shaping the future workforce.
