University Lab Partners (ULP) has launched the I-CREATE program to support innovative ideas in health security. In collaboration with the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), this initiative offers funding between $50,000 and $200,000 along with mentorship opportunities. Applications are open until September 30, 2025.
The I-CREATE initiative seeks fresh solutions in areas such as pandemic readiness, infectious disease detection, and health equity. It has a special focus on:
- Affordable and sensitive molecular diagnostics, including home testing
- New detection techniques like breath analysis
- Solutions tailored for underserved communities
- Proof-of-concept projects that show promise for improving health security
Accelerator Program Details:
The 12-week virtual accelerator will enroll ten teams. Participants will learn about business development, market strategy, and fundraising. There will be a showcase event where teams can pitch their ideas to investors, with a $50,000 prize for the best project.
Funding Opportunities:
Additionally, the I-CREATE program offers non-dilutive funding for six months. Teams can receive up to $200,000 to explore ways their innovations can improve public health responses. This funding will cover various costs, and each team will benefit from a dedicated mentor and access to a network of experts.
Stephanie Chan, Director of Innovation Programs at ULP, emphasizes the importance of this initiative: “I-CREATE combines funding and mentoring to push the next wave of diagnostic tools that can help us tackle public health crises.”

Importance of the Initiative:
In times of health crises, quick and effective diagnostics are crucial. Recent studies show that efficient testing can significantly reduce the spread of diseases and improve recovery rates. For instance, during the COVID-19 pandemic, rapid testing systems were instrumental in limiting outbreaks.
This program aims to empower innovators in the health sector, providing them with the resources they need to turn groundbreaking ideas into reality. With continued investment in health technologies, we can improve our preparedness for future challenges.
