New Learning Development Program at Penn State

Penn State’s Office of Educational Equity has introduced a Learning and Professional Development portfolio. This initiative aims to translate the university’s core values—integrity, respect, responsibility, discovery, excellence, and community—into daily practices.

The portfolio includes workshops that are inclusive and engaging. These sessions focus on skills like mentoring, communication, and community-building. Leslie Pearson, a learning and professional development specialist, emphasizes that effective professional development needs practical strategies. She notes, “These offerings are built to be relevant and applicable, featuring scenario-based learning and action planning so participants can leave with tools they can use right away.”

Starting this fall, the sessions will allow participants to practice skills through discussions and hands-on activities. In addition to the regular workshops, departments can request personalized sessions to better meet their needs.

Fall 2025 Workshop Schedule

One workshop, “Mentoring Students with Disabilities,” will take place in person on Wednesday, October 8, from 1 PM to 4 PM at University Park. Register here to secure your spot.

The times for other workshops, including “BUILD IDP: Tools for Compassionate Communication,” along with virtual options for mentoring students with disabilities, will be available on the program’s website.

These events are free for the entire Penn State community. They offer valuable opportunities for faculty, staff, and graduate students to enhance their mentoring and communication skills. Note that registration is required.
