The UC Futures: Rural & Small-Town Scholars Summer Program will take place from June 23-25 at the University of Cincinnati’s Uptown campus. This program is free for the first 80 high school sophomores and juniors who sign up, making it an excellent opportunity for students from rural areas to see what Cincinnati has to offer in terms of education and careers.

Nick Rejebian, the assistant director of strategic initiatives at UC, emphasizes the importance of this initiative. "We are committed to providing resources and support for students from diverse backgrounds, helping them pursue higher education," he said. He believes the program will empower rural students, giving them the confidence and tools needed for college and beyond.
Participants will enjoy a three-day residential experience on campus. They’ll attend sessions exploring various majors and careers, engage in networking, team-building activities with UC student leaders, and even go to a Cincinnati Reds baseball game. This mix of academic and social experiences is designed to help students imagine their futures in higher education.
To qualify for the program, students need to attend schools identified as "rural" or "small-town" by the National Center for Education Statistics, or live in designated Appalachian counties as outlined by the Appalachian Regional Commission. In addition, UC offers a $100 travel stipend, helping cover transportation costs for those who may need it.
The deadline to register is May 11 at 11:59 p.m. ET.
As a note of context, programs like these are becoming increasingly important. Research shows that about 25% of high school seniors from rural areas never enroll in college, compared to only 9% from urban areas. Initiatives that connect students with higher education resources can play a crucial role in changing these statistics.
