Ghost Story Games has given us a sneak peek into their upcoming game, Judas, from BioShock creator Ken Levine. In their first Dev Log, they introduced an exciting “Villainy” system. This concept reminds many of the popular Shadow of Mordor’s unique gameplay features.
Levine has hinted at this system since he first teased Judas in 2017. He’s aiming to create something even more dynamic than the Nemesis system found in Shadow of Mordor, where players build relationships with various characters during their journey. This feature has been widely praised, but few games have replicated it successfully.
The “Villainy” system allows players to make choices that affect how they relate to the game’s three main characters. If players neglect one character, that character transforms into a villain. This new antagonist acquires distinct abilities and starts working against the player’s goals.
In Levine’s words, “In Judas, you’ll get to know these characters intimately. We want losing one of them to feel like losing a friend.” This approach will add emotional weight to player choices. The characters will compete for the player’s affection, offering to help in battles or sharing secrets. Ultimately, players will face tough decisions about who to trust.
Recent studies show that emotional engagement is crucial for player retention. A survey conducted by the Entertainment Software Association found that 61% of gamers feel more connected to a game when they have emotional ties to its characters. This makes the Villainy system a promising way to keep players invested in Judas.
Ghost Story also revealed that the game will feature over a hundred different speaking parts, reflecting a robust character roster. While a release date hasn’t been set, the buzz around Judas continues to grow.
