Unlock Your Well-Being: Essential Mental Health Resources for York College Students

Even though the immediate effects of COVID-19 have calmed down, many college students are still trying to adapt. They are juggling schoolwork with personal and financial responsibilities, leading to significant stress. A recent study showed that over one-third of American college students report feeling moderate to severe depression, highlighting the need for support.

At York College, a diverse institution in Jamaica, 94% of students are racial minorities, with a significant portion being female and coming from low-income backgrounds. This demographic is particularly vulnerable to mental health challenges, as noted by the Mayo Clinic. The mental health landscape for students has shifted, with increasing concerns about their future amidst rising inflation and economic uncertainty.

The Counseling Center at York College offers essential services to help students cope. It provides private counseling, health services, and workshops like “Wellness Wednesdays,” aimed at fostering mental health awareness. Students can also access online platforms like Uwill, which connects them to therapists for support through video, phone, or messaging.

Despite available resources, many students are unaware of them. “I had no idea York had mental health services, so I didn’t find any support,” reflects Tatyanna Willis, a psychology major. Nichole Acevedo, Interim Manager at the Women’s Center, pointed out that many students are commuters, which limits their engagement with campus services.

Efforts are being made to increase visibility around mental health resources. The college is using flyers and social media to spread the word about support available for academic, relationship, and family issues. “Mental health services at York College have been an amazing experience. The counseling center is a world of its own,” says Jerina Forbes, an English major.

According to a survey by the Healthy Minds Network, students who participate in mental health programs report feeling better equipped to handle their challenges. Engaging in wellness workshops can be particularly beneficial in developing skills for resilience. As mental health continues to be a pressing issue for students, fostering a supportive environment is crucial for their overall success. By creating more awareness and encouraging participation in available resources, York College is taking significant strides towards promoting mental well-being among its students.
