Microsoft is rolling out a free update to millions of Windows 10 users. If you’ve received the new mandatory update labeled KB5063709, you can now choose to “Enroll in Extended Support Updates.” This option will keep your system protected until October 2026.
As reported by Windows Latest, there’s a new “Enroll Now” link on the Windows Update page. The free update allows you to extend your security support by linking it to your Microsoft account and OneDrive, while you can also pay $30 for multiple PCs under a single account.
Microsoft announced this update back in July, emphasizing that a user-friendly enrollment wizard will guide you through selecting the best option for your system. However, some users faced technical issues, like crashes when trying to enroll. Thankfully, those problems have reportedly been fixed.
Interestingly, while this offer provides critical updates for Windows 10 users, it might be slowing down the transition to Windows 11. A recent analysis showed that around 700 million users remain on Windows 10, with about 250 million of those unable to upgrade. This has reversed recent trends where Windows 11 was gaining users.
According to Statcounter, Windows 11 had just surpassed Windows 10 in market share for the first time, but this ESU offer may lead to a different outcome. While it’s important to keep your system secure, offering extended support may inadvertently encourage users to stick with Windows 10 instead of upgrading.
As for Windows 11, it’s set to reach the end of support on November 11, 2025. If you’re still using version 23H2, make sure to update swiftly to avoid security vulnerabilities. Microsoft has highlighted that starting in November, users who do not update will no longer receive crucial security updates. This gap could leave many users exposed to cyber threats.
