The Hawai‘i Island Food Basket is about to get a major boost with $2 million in federal funding. This money will fund a new steel farmers market pavilion. It will help local farmers, food vendors, and small businesses sell their produce effectively.
This pavilion is part of the Food Basket’s Hoʻolako Agriculture Innovation Park. This project aims to create or support around 190 agricultural jobs while increasing the processing capabilities for local crops.
Senator Brian Schatz of Hawaii secured these funds through congressionally directed spending. He believes this will help many families access healthy, locally grown food. “This will benefit both farmers and families in need,” he stated.
The new pavilion will also help reduce the island’s over-reliance on imported food, which currently stands at a staggering 90%. By blending traditional agricultural methods with modern practices, the park aims to build a more stable food supply.
Kristin Frost Albrecht, the Executive Director of the Food Basket, called the funding a “transformative victory for food security.” She expressed gratitude for this investment, saying it strengthens the local food system and helps families access fresh, nutritious food.
As of 2025, around 90,000 people on Hawai‘i Island face challenges in getting consistent, healthy meals. The Food Basket distributes over 3.5 million pounds of food each year through a network of more than 100 partner agencies. This funding couldn’t come at a better time, as food insecurity remains a pressing issue.
