UC San Diego Health and Palomar Health are exploring a new partnership. They recently signed a letter of intent to create a Joint Powers Authority. This authority would be run by both organizations and oversee the operations of Palomar.

The aim? To enhance healthcare access and stability in the San Diego region. Palomar Health, which manages two medical centers and several other sites in North County, has faced financial challenges. Partnering with UC San Diego Health could offer a way to improve its situation.

Patty Maysent, CEO of UC San Diego Health, emphasized the partnership’s potential. “This collaboration reflects our commitment to expanding access to healthcare,” she stated. Similarly, Diane Hansen, CEO of Palomar Health, sees this initiative as a chance to enhance services for local patients.

In March, UC San Diego Health provided Palomar with a $20 million loan. This support comes as Palomar Health recently faced a downgrade from Fitch Ratings, which indicated ongoing financial struggles. The downgrade highlighted the need for strategic partnerships in the healthcare sector.

Recent statistics underscore the competitive landscape in healthcare. While Palomar’s market share has declined, its rivals like UCSD Health and Scripps Health have maintained or increased their positions. According to the Fitch report, Palomar Health remains crucial for North San Diego County, being the only provider of trauma and neonatal care in the area.

The Joint Powers Authority discussions aim for completion by late 2025. As these organizations move forward, they hope to stabilize Palomar’s operations and improve the healthcare options available to residents.

Interestingly, this trend of healthcare partnerships isn’t isolated. Across the U.S., many health systems are joining forces to remain competitive. A study by the American Hospital Association reveals that nearly 80% of surveyed hospitals are considering partnerships to increase efficiency and enhance patient care.
