Unlocking AI for All: NVIDIA and the University of Florida Join Forces to Empower Every College

The University of Florida (UF) is stepping up its game in artificial intelligence (AI) education. The UF AI steering committee is on a mission to offer equal opportunities for all students to thrive in an AI-driven world. They’ve partnered with all 16 colleges at UF to develop and fund exciting AI initiatives.

To kick things off, the university needed funds for new AI infrastructure, software, and laboratories, as well as to hire talented faculty. Florida stepped in with a significant boost: $100 million for a new data center and an annual $15 million to recruit 100 new AI faculty members. This investment signals the state’s commitment to advancing education in cutting-edge technologies.

UF also tapped into its donor network for additional support. They allocated $15 million to enhance their data center capabilities.

The university then teamed up with NVIDIA to install the HiPerGator AI, a massive supercomputer featuring 140 NVIDIA DGX A100 systems, each packed with powerful GPUs and thousands of CPUs. This installation, which took just 90 days, is the largest AI supercomputer set up at a university, enhancing UF’s research power.

One of the impressive outcomes has been the creation of GatorTron, the largest clinical language model to date. With 3.9 billion parameters, it outstrips its nearest competitor by more than 10 times. GatorTron has shown a significant improvement in accuracy, reducing misclassification rates by 24% in specific medical tasks.

This progress reflects a shifting landscape in education and healthcare, where AI is increasingly vital. As of 2023, about 37% of U.S. healthcare organizations report using AI in their operations, according to a recent survey by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). This adoption is expected to grow, as institutions recognize the benefits of AI in improving patient outcomes.
