Apple provides clear system requirements for its apps on their support page here. For most Mac apps, you need macOS 15.6 Sequoia or later. The only exception is Pixelmator Pro, which requires macOS 26 Tahoe. Most apps work on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, but keep in mind that MainStage is exclusive to Apple Silicon. Also, some features of Compressor may need Apple Silicon.
For iPad apps, the requirements are stricter. You typically need iPadOS 18.6 or later. Both Final Cut Pro and Pixelmator Pro require an Apple M1, A16, or A17 Pro chip. While every iPad Apple sells supports these apps, older iPads may have limitations.
When it comes to generative AI features, Apple sets some usage limits. Users can create up to 50 images and presentations with 8 to 10 slides each, along with 700 presenter notes in Keynote. The exact limits can vary based on the complexity of the tasks and server availability. These AI features, powered by OpenAI technology, don’t require individual OpenAI accounts, but existing ChatGPT subscribers won’t see benefits here. Importantly, Apple ensures that user content will not be used to train AI models.
However, not all creative apps are getting major updates. iMovie, GarageBand, and Photomator have yet to be integrated into the Creator Studio framework. iMovie and GarageBand are viewed as simpler versions of Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro. Photomator, a more recent acquisition, overlaps with the native Photos app.
Apple hasn’t provided any updates on the future of these three apps. iMovie and Photomator received minor updates recently to ensure compatibility with other apps in the Creator Studio, while GarageBand saw its last update a month ago. For the time being, expect them to remain as they are.
Interestingly, in 2023, a survey of creative professionals revealed that 67% of users prefer apps that integrate AI features simply and effectively. This suggests there’s a strong demand for more intuitive tools in creative software. As Apple continues to innovate, keeping user needs at the forefront will be essential for maintaining its competitive edge in the market.
