The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) recently held the Safety Seminar 2025 at the Indian Aviation Academy in New Delhi. This event brought together government officials, industry leaders, and aviation experts to discuss pressing safety issues in India’s growing aviation sector.
Under the theme “Enhancing Aviation Safety through Collaboration,” the seminar emphasized the need for stronger teamwork among regulators, operators, and maintenance teams. With India now the third-largest domestic aviation market globally, this collaboration has never been more important.
Samir Kumar Sinha, the Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, opened the seminar. He stated that aviation safety is a continuous commitment, not a one-time goal. “Safety is about vigilance, compliance, and accountability,” he explained, stressing that everyone in aviation shares this responsibility.
India’s aviation growth has been significant. Over the past decade, domestic passenger traffic has risen by an average of 9 percent annually, while cargo traffic has grown by 2.9 percent. The number of commercial aircraft has also surged from 395 in 2014 to 844 this year. Sinha mentioned that 2025 is crucial, as the industry has faced challenges that have tested its strength.
One concern highlighted was maintenance-related operational risks. Sinha noted that errors during maintenance can lead to serious mechanical problems. This topic became a focal point during discussions at the seminar.
Faiz Ahmed Kidwai, the DGCA Director General, reinforced the regulator’s commitment to proactive safety measures aligned with global standards. Key regulations discussed included the “Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam, 2024” and the “National Aviation Safety Plan (2024-2028).”
The seminar featured three technical sessions, covering topics like runway safety and maintenance errors. Experts shared insights, analyzed issues, and suggested proactive solutions for improving safety management.
Industry representatives praised the seminar, calling it a vital platform for discussion. They appreciated the DGCA’s efforts to promote a safety culture that aligns with international standards.
