Unlocking Battlefield Potential: How India’s Revolutionary Ramjet Artillery Shells Are Set to Transform Military Engagement

India is making waves in artillery technology with two significant advancements. First, it’s introducing the world’s first ramjet-powered 155 mm artillery shell. This innovation boosts the firing range by 30 to 50 percent, allowing shells to hit targets nearly 80 kilometers away—far beyond the previous limit of 45 kilometers for standard shells. This groundbreaking technology was developed by IIT Madras in collaboration with the Army Technology Board.

The ramjet system works like a jet engine. After the initial push from the artillery gun, it draws oxygen from the air to keep burning, enhancing range and performance. Trials for this technology have been successful at the Pokhran Field Firing Ranges. Professor P.A. Ramakrishna of IIT Madras leads the project, which can adapt existing 155 mm shells and integrate with current artillery systems, including the M777 howitzer and K9 Vajra howitzer.

In another development, NIBE Limited, based in Pune, secured a ₹292.69 crore contract with the Indian Army to supply advanced rocket launcher systems. This deal, recently announced, covers a variety of ground equipment and projectiles for Universal Rocket Launching Systems, which can engage targets up to 300 kilometers away. The technology being utilized originates from the Israeli PULS (Precise & Universal Launching System). NIBE plans to fulfill the order within a year and has established a technology transfer agreement with Elbit Systems to produce these systems locally.

This drive toward modernization is part of a larger shift in the Indian Army. It’s moving from traditional artillery operations to more integrated strike units that use advanced technology like drones and AI for targeting. Ganesh Nibe, managing director of NIBE Limited, emphasizes that their aim is to blend precision engineering with innovative solutions to strengthen India’s defense sector.

These developments play a crucial role in India’s self-reliance initiative, Atmanirbhar Bharat. By investing in local manufacturing, India is reducing its dependency on foreign imports and potentially opening doors to export opportunities in defense technology.

According to a recent report by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), such initiatives not only boost national security but also have broader implications for the economy. They create jobs and foster a technology-driven environment aimed at innovation.
