Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Medical experts are sounding the alarm about a rise in neurological disorders linked to poor lifestyle choices, particularly unhealthy diets. On World Brain Day, observed on July 22 with the theme ‘Brain Health for All Ages,’ doctors highlighted that bad eating habits and environmental factors are major players in conditions like stroke, epilepsy, and chronic headaches.
Many doctors point out that a diet high in saturated fats and sugars can worsen diabetes and hypertension—both known risk factors for strokes and nerve damage. They recommend steering clear of processed foods, sugary drinks, and anything laden with trans fats. Instead, a diet filled with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats, such as that in the Mediterranean diet, can support brain health and might help lower the risk of cognitive decline.
Environmental factors also play a significant role. Neurologist Dr. TN Dubey explains that pollutants like PM2.5 can cause inflammation and stress in the nervous system. Heavy metals and pesticides contribute to neurological issues, making it vital to be aware of our surroundings and diet.
According to Dr. ID Chaurasia, green leafy vegetables are key to maintaining brain health. He advises against fast food like burgers and pizzas, as these can increase the risk of serious conditions such as strokes. Regular exercise, along with a nutritious diet, should be ingrained in our daily lives.
Road Accidents and Brain Injuries
Rising road accidents are another concern, leading to brain injuries that can result in long-term mental disabilities. Neurologists warn that such injuries may cause complications like concussions, strokes, and epilepsy. Dr. Dubey emphasizes the importance of protecting our brains, particularly by wearing helmets when riding two-wheelers and practicing safe driving.
Statistics show that neurological disorders are on the rise globally, with the World Health Organization noting a significant increase in conditions like Alzheimer’s and epilepsy over the past decade. A recent report indicated that in urban areas, exposure to traffic-related air pollution has been linked to cognitive decline, underscoring the need for public awareness and action.
