Strengthening Climate Cooperation in Bangladesh

Syeda Rizwana Hasan, the Environment Adviser, recently met with a delegation led by Erik Solheim, a former Norwegian Minister of Environment and Climate Change, and Kavin Kumar Kandasamy, CEO of ProClime, at Pani Bhaban on March 2.

During their meeting, they discussed ways to enhance partnerships for climate initiatives. Rizwana stressed the importance of making sure that climate investments benefit local communities and help restore ecosystems.

The talks covered several key areas, including reforestation, managing invasive species, and restoring biodiversity. The delegation showed interest in supporting initiatives like afforestation and agroforestry in Bangladesh. They also suggested implementing sustainable forest management practices to improve environmental resilience.

One significant topic of conversation was the development of carbon credit projects and renewable energy solutions. The delegation emphasized the need for a solid national framework to support these efforts, particularly in relation to Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. They also offered technical assistance to bolster Bangladesh’s carbon registry system.

Both parties recognized the urgency of boosting climate action through public-private partnerships, skill-building, and new financing strategies. Rizwana assured that she would work with relevant government departments to explore further opportunities for collaboration.
