Unlocking Climate Solutions: CDA Chief Highlights the Importance of Inter-Provincial Collaboration for Carbon Credit Success

Chairman of the Capital Development Authority (CDA), Muhammad Ali Randhawa, highlighted the pressing need for collaboration between federal and provincial entities to address climate change in Pakistan. Speaking at a meeting focused on environmental improvement and carbon credits, he emphasized that major cities face serious environmental challenges that require joint efforts.

Randhawa noted that by working together, Pakistan could play a vital role in the global carbon credit market. He underlined the importance of learning from Sindh’s environmental management strategies. The Sindh Forest Department is set to lend its expertise as Islamabad launches its carbon credit program.

To qualify for carbon credits, CDA is planning various initiatives. These include transforming barren lands into lush green areas, enhancing the Gardenia Hub nursery, improving solid waste management, and introducing 160 electric buses. Randhawa believes these actions will significantly reduce pollution and promote sustainable urban development in Islamabad.

Moreover, consistent communication and effective teamwork between federal and provincial teams will be crucial for the success of these projects, according to Randhawa. The meeting also included input from environmental experts, reinforcing the importance of a united approach to combat climate change.

A recent report from the World Bank shows that Pakistan faces some of the highest climate risks globally, exacerbating the urgency for effective climate policies. With around 60% of the population relying on agriculture, the impact of climate change can severely affect livelihoods. In light of this, successful carbon credit projects not only promise environmental benefits but also sustainable economic development.
