In the early 1990s, women from Pakistan’s northern mountain valleys noticed something troubling: their forests were disappearing. The hills were thinning, grazing lands were degrading, and finding firewood was becoming increasingly difficult. Under the Aga Khan Rural Support Programme, these women took action. They started nurseries, restored slopes, and managed community grazing systems, often using practices that proved more effective than government efforts. A 1995 review by K. Hameed Ullah underscored the importance of community involvement in forestry.

For these women, the forest wasn’t just a source of timber; it held memories and represented a shared duty to their land. Sadly, this perspective is often overlooked in Pakistan’s climate discussions. Modern debates focus on finance, diplomacy, and emission targets, while community values and traditional knowledge are sidelined. Policies that succeed typically align with the everyday beliefs and practices of the people who will implement them.

Take the Kalash community in the Kalash Valleys. They’ve lived sustainably in the fragile Hindu Kush mountains for centuries. Their agricultural practices emphasize crop diversity and low-input methods that have been recognized as ecologically sound. Water distribution relies on community rules passed down through generations. Their seasonal festivals, such as Joshi and Uchal, celebrate the reciprocity between the people and the land that sustains them. Unfortunately, much of this rich culture is absent from official climate strategies.

Similarly, the Bishnoi community stands as a testament to environmental resistance. In 1730, over 360 Bishnoi men and women died protecting trees from royal forces. Their act wasn’t driven by regulations; it stemmed from a deep-rooted belief in the sanctity of nature. Even today, Pakistan is rich in ecological wisdom that is often unrecognized. Traditional methods, like kul irrigation channels in Baltistan, continue to prove effective, even as modern systems falter.

Another significant historical site is Sharada Peeth, which served as a prominent center of learning from the 6th to the 12th centuries. Today, it’s surrounded by mountains and forests, caught between history and modern neglect. Restoring Sharada Peeth could revive a connection between education and the environment, reminding us that historical civilizations valued knowledge closely tied to nature.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, indigenous and local knowledge is vital for effective climate adaptation. Yet, many communities with this knowledge face displacement and economic pressure. The climate crisis in Pakistan is pressing, highlighted by the 2022 floods that displaced millions and caused nearly $30 billion in damages. Water scarcity and extreme heat are growing issues as cities expand.

Pakistan is not short on environmental expertise; it often lacks the political will to leverage it. The women in the northern valleys planted trees because caring for the land was part of their daily life. The Kalash followed seasonal rhythms that honored ecological balance, while the Bishnoi’s commitment to trees showed their respect for nature. Sharada Peeth’s ancient wisdom teaches us that education and nature can be interwoven.

These stories aren’t just cultural anecdotes for festivals or tourism. They illustrate that durable climate solutions may already exist in the traditions we often overlook. The climate crisis is urgent, but so is the knowledge to tackle it. The real question is whether we will recognize this wisdom before it slips away.
