Unlocking Collaboration: Discover How UVM’s RISE Summit is Igniting University-Community Partnerships!

On June 17, the University of Vermont will host its annual RISE Summit. This event brings together around 900 innovators and leaders from various fields to discuss “Research as a Public Good.” RISE stands for Research, Innovation, Sustainability, and Entrepreneurship. It’s a chance to explore how partnerships between universities and communities can enhance well-being in rural areas.

Tricia Coates, director of the Leahy Institute for Rural Partnerships, highlighted the summit’s role in connecting people and ideas. “The energy in the room has always been vibrant and engaging,” she said. This year, RISE will be a one-day event, packed with discussions and opportunities for collaboration.

Keynote speakers include:

  • Mark Becker, President of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities, discussing the importance of research in communities.
  • Mike Pieciak, Vermont State Treasurer, who will lead a panel featuring local leaders like Kirk Dombrowski, Jennifer Stromsten, and Sky Barsch.
  • Senator Patrick Leahy, presenting the Distinguished Community Engagement Award to a faculty member for exceptional collaboration within Vermont.

UVM’s new President Designate, Marlene Tromp, will welcome participants. The event will offer panels and workshops led by experts from various fields, like Vermont Electric Power Company and Vermont Public. Discussions will focus on:

  • Asking the Right Questions
  • Building Effective Teams
  • Communicating the Work

But that’s not all! Attendees can look forward to pitches from student entrepreneurs, a special menu of sustainable foods, networking opportunities, and even a live performance by Front Porch Follies.

Research shows that community-centered initiatives can lead to lasting positive changes. A recent study found that 80% of small towns believe local collaborations are crucial for improving quality of life.

The RISE Summit is more than just a conference; it’s a platform for innovation and inspiration. By fostering these collaborations, we can tackle the complex challenges that rural communities face today. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, educator, or community leader, there’s something valuable for everyone.
