As my time at Notre Dame came to an end, I wanted to take in every moment and wisdom this place offers. Sure, I learned from incredible professors, but I also found teachers in my friends and even strangers. So, during my senior year, I started carrying a little red notebook wherever I went. I asked everyone I met to share their “best life advice” in it. This initiative stemmed from the realization that everyone has something meaningful to teach, and many are eager to share — especially on a Friday night!
I’ve been lucky enough to collect advice from hundreds of people in the Notre Dame community — in classes, at bars, on the quad, in the dorms, and even across the country.
As I revisited the notes — now filling three notebooks — I noticed recurring themes. This is where my English degree really came into play. One standout theme is the importance of community. Anyone who knows me knows I often talk about my love for Farley Hall. It’s no shock that “Farley” pops up frequently in the notebooks. Phrases like “I LOVE FARLEY” showcase what makes Notre Dame unique: its strong sense of belonging. My time in Farley has shaped me; it truly feels like family.
Another common piece of advice from my peers centers around gratitude. You emphasized appreciating life’s small joys and following your gut feelings. Many said things like, “If you’re torn between two choices, go for it! You’ll regret the chances not taken more than the risks taken!” and, “Find what truly excites you; that’s where you’ll thrive.” Practical tips, like “Say hi to familiar faces even if you pretend you don’t know them” and “Read more books, skip TikTok,” also surfaced.
The most profound message was about people. You reminded me how vital it is to surround ourselves with loved ones and to express gratitude for them. So, I want to take a moment to thank everyone who has been part of this journey, who has helped shape who we are.
The wisdom I’ve gathered has positively influenced my life. As graduation approaches, I ask myself, “Why worry twice?” I remind myself to “trust the journey,” “hug your friends,” and “live in the moment.”
Notre Dame didn’t create us, but it chose and shaped us into who we are. If the messages in my little red notebooks are any indication, our class is filled with wonderful individuals ready to make a difference. I’m proud to be part of the Class of 2026 and the Notre Dame community. There’s truly no place like it.
In a recent survey, over 80% of Notre Dame students reported that community involvement enhances their college experience. This reveals that it’s not just about academic achievements; it’s about the bonds we create along the way. As we step into the future, let’s remember to carry this sense of connection with us. After all, it’s the relationships we build that make life truly rich.
