The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) recently shared its 2025 Annual Report, showcasing significant strides made in tackling major environmental issues last year, even amidst global tensions.

UNEP’s latest Global Environment Outlook revealed that improved environmental policies could generate trillions for the global economy, save millions of lives, and help lift many out of poverty and hunger.
After extensive discussions, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste and Pollution was formed. This panel aims to give policymakers the scientific insights needed to combat pollution and waste effectively.
At the latest UN Environment Assembly, countries adopted important resolutions related to areas like climate change, glacier melt, and the sustainable use of AI.
A major agreement to protect biodiversity in the high seas took effect as international law in January 2026, following UNEP’s support for its ratification by various countries.
Thanks to UNEP’s support, over 170,000 square kilometers of natural habitats have received better protection or management, benefiting around 2.3 million people.
UNEP’s International Methane Emissions Observatory detected leaks from oil and gas facilities across 36 countries. Alerts to governments led to repairs that stopped leaks releasing 1,200 tonnes of methane daily.
World Environment Day 2025 saw over 3,000 events across 155 countries, focusing on solutions to plastic pollution.
Despite these advancements, challenges remain. UNEP’s findings indicate that, with current climate commitments, global temperatures could rise by 2.3 to 2.5°C, surpassing the critical 1.5°C limit. Furthermore, to adapt to climate change effectively, countries will need about $365 billion yearly by 2035—significantly more than they currently possess.
The ongoing global conflicts continue to pose environmental threats. UNEP has been actively involved in recovery efforts and offering strategies to restore damaged environments in places like Gaza, Ukraine, and Sudan.
Inger Andersen, UNEP’s Executive Director, pointed out the importance of global cooperation in environmental matters, stating, “2025 was a year where nations showed that environmental multilateralism can rise above geopolitical differences.” She emphasized UNEP’s role in addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation, and pollution to foster a resilient future for both people and the planet.
Additionally, the report underscores the necessity for consistent funding for UNEP to fulfill its mission. In 2025, 106 Member States contributed to UNEP’s core fund, enabling its vital work in 151 countries.
