Simon Stiell, the Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change, is making a four-day visit to Nigeria. His goal is to explore how a solid climate plan can benefit the country and engage with government officials, business leaders, and community groups.

Stiell’s trip will kick off in Abuja from March 4 to 5, 2025. There, he will connect with Nigerian officials and activists to discuss climate-related matters.
On March 6, he will attend a symposium in Lagos titled “Intersecting Worlds of Climate Change, Mangrove, and Art,” organized by Nigeria’s National Council on Climate Change Secretariat. This may be the first time many will learn about Nigeria’s updated climate strategy, known as the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC).
During the symposium, Stiell will talk about how Nigeria’s new climate plan can open up economic possibilities. His speech will highlight the importance of addressing climate change not just for the environment, but also as a way to reduce poverty and improve energy access for everyone.
He will emphasize that Nigeria’s economy has the potential to thrive, especially in sectors poised for growth. Bold climate actions are essential for realizing these opportunities and benefiting households, businesses, and the government.
Stiell will also address the need to protect the environment, which can enhance Nigeria’s ability to cope with extreme weather events linked to climate change. By safeguarding mangrove forests that shield coastal regions from flooding and supporting initiatives like the Great Green Wall in the Sahel, Nigeria can take meaningful steps to adapt to climate challenges while protecting its people, crops, and infrastructure.
In addition to his speech, Stiell will participate in a panel with business leaders and will engage with civil society representatives on March 7. This series of meetings presents a valuable opportunity for collaboration on climate solutions in Nigeria.
