Unlocking Economic Independence: Launch of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan’ in NDA States Amid U.S. Tariff Increases

India is launching a new campaign called “Atmanirbhar Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan,” aimed at promoting locally made goods. This three-month initiative will kick off on September 25, the birthday of Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay, and will run until December 25, the birthday of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The campaign comes at a time when the U.S. has imposed a 50% tariff on Indian exports, making it crucial for India to strengthen its local economy. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is encouraging state units to promote domestic products, especially during upcoming festivals like Durga Puja and Deepavali.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi first introduced the concept of self-reliance in May 2020, when he announced a significant economic package to combat the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic. He emphasized the importance of India becoming self-sufficient in various sectors. The idea is simple: by buying local, consumers can help the country, especially during festive seasons.

During his “Mann Ki Baat” radio address, Modi said that pride in “swadeshi” products is crucial. He encourages citizens to focus on being “vocal for local,” insisting that everything we need should ideally be made in India.

According to a recent survey by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), 85% of consumers expressed a preference for local products. This indicates a growing awareness and support for homegrown items, aligning perfectly with the campaign’s goals.

Involving social organizations, influencers, and celebrities, the campaign aims to raise public awareness. Events will be organized to highlight the importance of buying locally and its benefits for families and communities.

This movement is not just about economics; it’s also about building a sense of community. When people buy local products, it creates jobs and helps in skill development. Over the years, the Indian government has taken steps to modernize industries and improve productivity, all aimed at fostering self-reliance.

As we approach the festive season, the message is clear: supporting local goods can lead to a more robust economy and a stronger nation.
