Interview with Stephanie Dorsey, E Squared VC
Exciting Future Food Technologies
I’m really enthusiastic about how AI can change agriculture and food systems, especially in agtech. A major challenge right now is that different software doesn’t play well together. This can be frustrating. Think about entering the same data repeatedly or struggling to share information. New AI tools like large language models (LLMs) can help. They can make sense of messy data like photos or handwritten notes, creating connections between various systems.
Imagine if farmers could type a question into a chat box and get quick answers instead of navigating confusing menus. This would make software easier to use, allowing companies to focus on building new features rather than fixing old issues. For farmers, it means better, more user-friendly tools that save them time and effort.
Future Food Verticals to Watch in 2025
I’m looking at three main areas: SaaS solutions across the food value chain, supply chain technology, and cybersecurity.
Food Tech’s Greatest Achievement Recently
In the past five years, a significant achievement in food tech has been the rapid growth of precision fermentation. This technology allows companies to create animal protein alternatives, like milk and egg proteins, without using animals. The real breakthrough here has been lowering production costs dramatically, making these products financially viable.
Fixing Plant-Based Meat
If I could change one thing about plant-based meat, it would be to combat the misinformation from the animal agriculture industry. Currently, the plant-based sector isn’t just competing for market share; they’re fighting for the truth. There’s been a lot of misleading information regarding nutrition and legal tactics aimed at stifling plant-based innovation.
Plant-based alternatives are not just substitutes – they are healthier and great for the planet, offering lower saturated fats, zero cholesterol, and reduced water usage. If I had a magic wand, I’d help clear away misconceptions and let these products show their true value. With fewer obstacles, companies can innovate and improve their offerings.
Traits of a Great Founder
When I look for a founder to invest in, I’m after someone with a strong vision and the ability to see opportunities where others see obstacles. I admire a “healthy disregard for the impossible.” This shows me they can turn big ideas into reality, no matter the challenges.
A great founder understands their strengths and weaknesses. They prioritize facts and are excellent decision-makers. They listen to feedback and learn, which enhances their chances of success. They aim to inspire their team while remaining focused and adaptable.
The Deal I Wish I’d Closed
It’s tough to say at this point. We focus on early-stage investments, and it can take years for companies to grow. Ask me again in a few years!
My Best Future Food Investment
One of my standout investments is Vori. They’re working on innovative solutions for the grocery industry. Vori has created an AI-powered operating system for supermarkets, helping small grocers compete with larger chains. Their technology improves inventory management, pricing, and overall supply chain efficiency. They’re addressing big issues like food waste and are making strides in major cities across the U.S.
Common Misunderstandings About Venture Capital
One misconception is that venture capitalists are eager to say yes. In reality, we often say no. Our decisions involve various factors, including market fit and timing. A “no” doesn’t reflect on the quality of your idea; it just means it wasn’t the right fit for us at that moment.
My Favorite Dish This Month
This month, I enjoyed Prime Roots’ pepperoni. It’s incredibly good and doesn’t taste like a substitute. They use koji, a type of fungus used for centuries in Japanese cooking, to create realistic deli meats. This innovation shows how ancient ingredients can play a role in the future of meat alternatives.
A Climate-Forward Restaurant I Love
My favorite spot is Breads on Oak in New Orleans. They specialize in organic sourdough and plant-based desserts, all made with environmental care. Their plant-based sausage biscuit is the best I’ve ever had. It perfectly combines comfort food with creativity.
What Drives Me
Investing isn’t just a job for me. I’m deeply passionate about food, health, animals, and the environment. I feel lucky to connect my personal interests with my professional life. I’m committed to addressing some of the biggest challenges we face today: improving health for people and the planet.
