Recent Updates on Middle Point Landfill:

Murfreesboro, TN – Republic Services has put forth a massive plan to improve the county’s solid waste system, with a price tag of $1.13 billion. This plan is the result of years of dialogue among officials, leaders, and citizens. It aims to give Rutherford County control over its waste management while offering significant savings to residents. Here’s what the proposal includes:

• Reducing waste from Davidson County: Republic Services aims to stop accepting Davidson County’s curbside waste, which would prolong the life of the Middle Point landfill.
• Limiting out-of-county waste: There are plans to set caps on how much waste can come from outside the county, focusing on local waste to cut the total volume by half.
• Increasing host fees: The payment the county receives for out-of-county waste will rise from $1.20 to $2.50 per ton, compensating for the expected drop in waste volume.
• Taking on the old landfill’s liability: Republic proposes to buy the closed Rutherford County Landfill, which is near Middle Point, and manage its environmental responsibilities.
• Absorbing transfer station debt: After acquiring a $26 million debt for a new facility, Republic plans to transform this station into a recycling center, enhancing waste management for the county.
• Offering free waste disposal for locals: Residents will benefit from complimentary waste disposal at Middle Point, with long-term savings estimated at more than $201 per household.
• Developing recycling programs: In collaboration with the county, Republic will launch comprehensive recycling initiatives for both residents and businesses.
• Creating an environmental accountability council: This council, consisting of local citizens, will ensure transparency and open communication about the landfill’s operations.

“This proposal supports Rutherford County’s sustainable growth,” said Mike Classen. “It offers a thoughtful, cost-effective route for enhancing waste management and aligns with our goals for the future.”

Long-term benefits include:

• $769 million in savings from free disposal for residents.
• $265 million savings on landfill maintenance and liabilities.
• $70 million increase in revenue from host fees.
• $26 million saved from the transfer station debt.
